Hey DrDysdy, I'm familiar with the principle of existentialism, but I'm convinced that those who forget history are doomed to repeat it (sorry I don't know the exact quote) . I for one don't wish to see a repeat of the crusades, the inquisition, or the witch hunts which came from well meaning but misguided Christians. I do wish to call myself a Christian in the here and now. I can not do that in good conscience without knowing who has done so before me. If you wish to call yourself an atheist I would suggest that you should be aware of what others who accept that label have believed and taught. I'm not sure how Zeitgeist's spontaneous generation of intelligence is supposedly to occur but I am completely unconvinced that conscientious thought can occur in the vacuum of living for the moment.

Reiver, when you say "the Bible is false" I really must object. I don't think it a perfect book. But to imply that for instance Moses didn't exist makes me cringe. The Bible says he did and if it is false in it's entirety then where did the Ten Commandments come from? Are you saying that you don't believe one word of the Old Testament about the history of the Jews? Is that false in your mind too? I would put forth that the New Testament contains truth too. Paul gives what in my opinion is a pretty good definition of love in 1st Corinthians (ch. 13). Do you think he's wrong when you say the Bible is false or are you claiming that there simply is no such thing as love in the first place. Don't get me wrong I don't like it when people say "The Bible is TRUE" either. I think the Bible contains truth, but not that every single verse can be read literally. Do you understand my concern here?

There is evidence for a few of the events (i.e. there WAS a flood that wiped out nearly every living being in the middle east area) but the vast majority of the Bible has no evidence that it existed and some of the accounts (Jesus feeding the five thousand) directly contradict scientific law (conservation of energy) and have no other proof for them other than the Bible.
