OK I have an experiment for you to try, Reiver. I'd did it, and it convinced me that there was a God. I don't recommend this if you are lazy, stupid or faint of heart because as with any scientific experiment it takes work... leg work, brain work, and intuitive jumps.

So here's the experiment: Educate your self as much as possible about God. Start by reading the whole Bible, then the Koran, and throw in the Bhagavad Gita for a little diversity (You might also want to read the Toa te Ching though it's not about God directly it kept me from going completely insane as I tried to cram so many conflicting views into my head. After you've done that read whatever secondary texts you feel you need to come up with a more or less universally agreed on understanding of God. This notion of God will be a construct of you own mind as there is no actual agreement about the exact nature of God. Come up with the best definition for God that you can as no straw-man will make the experiment valid. You have to decide before hand on a very believable God. If you don't believe that God as you've envisioned Him (Her or It) is possible then you're not ready to begin the experiment. You absolutely must level the playing field in you head between atheism and theism. When you have done that try to do everything in you power to destroy God. Don't fight with any of his servants or opponents; because, as your doing the experiment you are trying to combat God not his followers or detractors. Prove to yourself one way or the other that there is or is not a God under the best possible conditions. This is the experiment you want, and I wish you luck and strength in your journey.
