I assume you are still in the training arena, so there are a lot of resources available through capturing, and you should be able to find some systems with green (uncolonized) planets. Those will give you free resources.
If you have *enough* resources, you may want to record the addresses of a couple of those green planets without colonizing them. When they move into the real arena, they may be worth using later.
It's been a long time since many of us started the game, but feel free to ask questions in the forums or via DM.
Also, when you get moved to the real galaxy and you find yourself close to established players, make sure you send them a "please don't kill me". Most of us will honor that request and help you get competitive.

Also, once you move to the real arena, the easiest way to get nice little bonus resource amounts is by pirating other active players, by figuring out where and when their ships will be located.

As a new player you'll find attacking established player planets to be quite the daunting challenge, and may want to focus on stacking up resources for now and expanding how many planets you have available to gather resources on.

Additionally, as there are only a handful of active players at the moment, the marketplace offers some great opportunities. Some resources have had the old stock from inactive players all bought out and become extremely expensive as a result. Producing and selling these resources can allow you to easily acquire the credits needed to increase your planet limit to 50 as well as allowing you to buy large amounts of the not-yet-depleted resources that are much cheaper.

Read the tutorial instructions carefully for probing. There are 8 systems with 3 planets each, 24 planets total, that were generated around your starting system.

And once you get to the real arena there'll be a lot more planets around, and with higher production numbers too.

ya slowly finding with probes waiting on the gold and no nearby slow going

Just make sure you spread out more once you hit real arena. It's very easy to get wiped in a couple of hours if all your planets are connected.
