The probabilities of survival are fixed and very easy to calculate. Average damage is easy to calculate. However, there is definitely some element of luck involved, in that sometimes, you kill two turrets and often none with an untrained fighter attacking.

Turret damage can be based around the averages though, leaving the luck where it began -- me logging in at the right time.

Yeah, it is a foolish general who does not plan for uncertainty. War is NEVER certain. If you have only just enough to win a battle on average, don't start the fight, as something is bound to go wrong. In real life, it might rain. An enemy might have a spy or hidden defenses in an unexpected location and give warning of an attack. A bridge might collapse. Lots of times luck can play a decisive role in real battles in real life. Any study of strategy starts with an understanding of the role of uncertainty and risk in any conflict, and then looks at ways to maximize options and minimize risk.
