This is about official meetings, I have been suspended from school. Having spoken to witnesses of the incident my parents have decided to appeal against my suspension.

For the meeting they wish to bring a solicitor due to the fact that they have lodged a formal complaint against the teacher whom brought about my suspension.

The school has refused to allow this.

What I want to know is this:

For a formal meeting, are you allowed to bring a solicitor for legal advice, no matter the occasion or circumstances and is it allowed for a 2nd party to refuse you the right of having legal representation present.

Also:

A conversation with said teacher at parents evening was recorded by my mother due to the absence of my father.

In said recording my teacher openly refused to support any attempt by me to catch up on missed work due to sporting or hospital induced absences, a refusal to mark back into my book for work not handed in due to said reasons and a refusal to supply me with the module of work for the previous year; something she is legally required to do if asked.

My parents planned on using this recording as evidence of this teachers lack of professionalism and informed the school. In response my school has refused to hear the tape and banned my parents from any future meetings with staff.

Is this professional, appropriate and more importantly, legal behaviour for a school?

Dios, you may take a solicitor/legal advisor where ever the you like. Unless a person or organisation has lawful/diplomatic immunity (and like does your school have that), they can be taken anywhere.

If a teacher is refusing to do 'something she is legally required to do if asked', then of course she is in the wrong. Not only can you sue the teacher, but also the whole school for this alone for not disciplining or dismissing her.

As for banning meetings with the parents, the school can only stop those if the meeting takes place on the school premises; if a teacher wishes to meet with your parents elsewhere he/she may do so. Maybe just to tick them off you could do it right outside your school's main gates >D

But yes, they are definitely in the wrong and you should blitz them for it

OK mate the best place to go and get advice on these things is the Citizens Advice Bureau. They will know all the legal matters and most likely give you contacts and other advice.
