It's the sky at night because the "barrier" that is the atmosphere becomes see through, but the atmosphere and space are very different things.

"DM you're wrong, the general idea of sky is that it is the Earth's Atmosphere. The only reason you don't see it at night is because the light is defracted in the Atmosphere, giving the atmosphere a colour, at night there is not enough light to do this so you see into the "infinite" space that you talk of."

The light defracting has nothing to do with whether or not you can see into the night sky. Its called light pollution. The intensity of the light causes a person lookin into the not to be able to see anything. That's why in large cities you can't see any stars. Maybe Polaris, but thats pretty much it.

Have you ever wondered what's the purpose of life? You better don't... There's no purpose, so don't waste your time.
