Preface: I'd like to start this off by making it clear that I have been playing less than two weeks. Unfortunately there is a large amount of useful material that is buried among piles of aged advice. This topic is meant to consolidate hours of searches and information into an easy to read manual for new players.

Introduction: Welcome to Skylords! A browser based strategy game set in space where you gather resources, attack planets, destroy ships, and defend your own. Before beginning it's important to note that the first few days are VERY slow. You will only be able to take a handful of planets, and gathering enough troops to take more planets will require approximately 24 hours. Be patient. The game gets faster, and more enjoyable the longer you play.

User Interface: The user interface is split into two domains. A horizontal UI bar that allows access to all the 'major' areas of the game. This includes the forums, your mission tutorial, your planet list, ship list, open space area, news, and profile (among others).
Aside from the horizontal UI bar, another vertical UI bar can be found on the left hand corner of your screen. This vertical bar changes depending on where you are currently at. For instance, in the 'Forums', the vertical UI bar will contain the names of all the public forums available, any private forums, and access to your private message inbox.
It is important to understand that most site navigation (that is going from one major portion of the website to another) is done via the horizontal UI bar, while most buttons critical for gameplay can be found in the vertical UI bar.

Private Messages: Private messages are a way of communication between players. They are similar to the private messages you would receive on any social media such as Facebook or Twitter. In order to access your private messages you would go to 'Forums' and then 'Private Messages' on the vertical side bar. Occasionally your Private Messages button will turn red to indicate you've received a new message, and your 'Home' screen will display how many new private messages you may have received while offline at the top of the screen.
This is Skylords main form of communication outside of the forums so you should check it fairly often in case someone is trying to get into contact with you, or you wish to contact someone.

Planets: There are three classes of planets: Green planets are neutral, uncolonized planets that are undetectable by probe or the 'Nearby Planet' function, and can be easily claimed using the 'Colonize Nearby Planet' function from the ships panel. Red planets are planets that are owned by other players or NPC's and must be attacked in order to be brought under your control. Attacking planets will be explained in a later mission, but you will essentially need an 'Assault' ship loaded with more troops than the enemy planet has defense. Some planets often termed 'Homeworlds' (HW's) have much more defense than is possible to fit onto a single assault. These types of planets require many assaults to dwindle defensive resources down until it is capturable. Blue planets are those that are owned by yourself and gather resources for you every 15 minutes.
In order to complete the first mission go into your 'Ships' menu on your horizontal UI bar, and select your default transport ship from your list of available ships. You can move your ship by clicking on the nearby squares (you must click on a square next to your ship to move, clicking on a square not next to your ship will not move it). Move your ship next to the green planet, and press the 'Colonize Nearby Planet' button on your vertical UI bar.
Homeworlds: Homeworlds are planets where huge amounts of defensive resources (energy and troops) are amassed in order to keep resources safe, and keep a player from being defeated. Homeworlds are generally considered to be planets that have at least 30 million defense.
