you need some luck in the new players arena too, and if you don't think you need it you have it.
a veteran discovered my planet when i was in new players arena, so i obliterated all my planets and escaped(after i went on real arena.

i would say the game is 30% luck 70% skill.....the luck is to find the planet the skill to act upon the luck
