Total points is a tainted category as the point system continues to change - does it make sense for current (or past) players to be compared with something that has different values on the same scale? Not to mention the old cheating points that would finally be eliminated.

Defeated players has issues too - too many times you get credit for 2 defeats for the same person and I also seem to remember a round not so long ago when players like Starfox defeated some 500 players in a round due to all of the newbie planet drops.... so I think some of the historical numbers are tainted there as well

Plus the real advantage of a reset is EVERYONE is equal - I have huge reserves, vast numbers of coords, green planet locations, etc as I have played for a long time so would have more to lose than most players (older Vets may have more but most player have a far smaller data base of such things) - however the idea of a random start where Smartfox could be my nearby and defeat me on 7 days after immunity (or vice versa) seems pretty exciting - certainly more so than losing 1 planet a week to the warp or a newbie and simply harvesting resources and waiting for my next big attack.....

Keep the scores in honor of past accomplishments - have a hall of fame for round 1 - but reset the game and start fresh... perhaps with the new year?

and about points for res, I think professor you are not right. Have you calculated how much points would you get for all res you have on planets? :)
Or you want to win round just for keeping your res - as in getting a lot of points for res kept, you'll get the biggest bonus... And why you calculating only one planet - someone can have 10 full planets and get near million points every month if you'll get such system...

I have calculated it, and even if I had every planet full of max resources I could including taking all resources off the market, I would not come close to winning the round. And, there is no player in the game with more total resources than I have now, since I have been using credits and trading troops purchased in past rounds to buy resources I considered to be unwanted and undervalued. Even so, with all these resources available, I would not be able to win on points unless I got active and started attacking something, but I did ask Iiridayn to come up with a point system that would make it meaningful to have resources on planets without making it dominate the game. This appeared to be a good balance point, with the largest resource player in the game able to be in the top 20 players of a round based on resources, but definitely not to win any round based on resources alone.

There is no player in the game that has enough resources to have 10 completely full HWs, and any player who did have that amount of resources could easily win a round by using just a portion of those resources in a large attack on an inactive player HW if they wanted to do so. And, any player who tried to keep HWs with all resources full would find that they are extremely attractive targets for players seeking conquest opportunities, so they would not be able to last for long.

As for reset discussions, I think that even if we did have a reset, I would not reset total points. The issues about advantages due to having lots of resources and planets are valid, but whether or not points were earned fairly is less important to me than having players keep their history of having won those points in the first place. I do not mind having players vote to start everyone off on a level playing field (the soonest this would possibly happen, even if supported by everyone, is early 2006). However, I do not ever want to reset total points, and there are, in my opinion, more reasons not to do so than to do so.

maybe have an option in peoples profiles(if they played before reset) to have an archived scores screen where thier total points.thier positions in previous round etc would be stored)

A- Points for resources, great idea, lets me know whose inactive HW to try to buy coords to since whichever inactive has most points has the most resources to take.

B- Reset- sounds good to me if it is a total reset so everybody starts off with the same stuff. Although makes moot my plan of being stronger in 6 months, but thats okay, if everyone is the same then just a matter of keeping up as people gain strength again.

C- Other changes, sounds good to me.

I still prefer no reset, so it will take vote of support from SL council to start with and then vote of player community overall to confirm agreement and acceptance of reset before I would do so, and even then, I will not wipe out total points from player records. I do not care if some of the points were earned long ago when it was easier to earn points, or if it is easier or harder in the future to earn points. Yes, points are higher and lower at different periods of the history of the game, but I continue to see value even so in retaining historical records of player points.

I have no problem, however, with modest inflation of points over time (more planets with credits means more troops so more defenses able to be taken out, for example). Points for resources on planets would be an example of that as well. These are new areas of points, and points for ships that are far in excess of 10 points per ship are another example of point inflation, which will make future scores higher than some of the recent rounds, but still maybe lower than round eight and a few other of the earlier rounds in the game where large points were easier to earn.

This simply recognizes the value of remaining active in the game, and reflects the evolving nature of the game.

1. reset would be nice. i'd like us to keep total points though, because - even if LS is absolutely right - they still tell the story of some of SL vets. and that is something of a heritage.

2. i still don;t like the idea of points awarded for res kept on planets.
points should be for active players only.
give credits instead of points (for res on planets) and let them turn those into points if they have the guts and the energy. this should motivate people into keeping HWs filled but will not award undeserved points to inactives.
