Three people enter a hotel and pay $10 each for a $30 room. Once they got settled into their room the Bell Boy hear's about it and asks the manager why he charged them $30 for a $25 dollar room. The manager gives the Bell Boy $5 to give back to them but on the way there the Bell Boy decides they can;t split it equally so he only gives each one of them $1 and keeps the extra $2. So really each of the three people only payed 9$ for the room, right? And $9x3= $27 and the Bell Boy kept $2 making it $29 dollars so where did the extra dollar go?

no its dead easy, the last bit is all just fake logic. there's no sence in adding what they paid to what the bell boy took, as what the bell boy took was from what they paid...

I'm just making you more confused right?

they pay $9 each, which totals $27, the bell boy took $2 which you subtract, not add to the $27 making $25, which is what the hotel took...

Right. there is no missing money:
each of the first 3 people have $1 each
the bellboy has $2
the hotel has $25
that adds up to $30

in answer to your question (I'll avoid the obvious reference to primary school education) with another question - why would you ADD what the bellboy took to what the people paid? there's no reason to - think about it

I simply subtracted it in an effort to show how the money was distributed, and to show that the sum of the two values was irrelevant.
